<p>The Gardiner Museum is the first stop for any ceramic traveler to Toronto,showcasing the best known ceramics collection in the country. The permanent collection covers a wide breadth of ceramic history up to the present day,and the their ongoing exhibitions host the finest of contemporary ceramics,such as Shery Boyle’s recent <em>Outside the Palace of Me</em>,Sharif Bey’s <em>Colonial Ruptures</em>,and Dame Magdalene Odundo’s premier Canadian exhibition <em>A Dialogue with Objects</em>. The Gardiner also features a fantastic community clay studio with regular workshops,an artist residency program,and plays host to the International Ceramic Art Fair. <p>Just a short walk from the Gardiner Museum is Canada’s largest museum,the ROM,easily identified by its contemporary geometric facade designed by architect Daniel Libeskind. While perhaps primarily thought of as a natural history museum,the ROM’s cultural collections feature a wealth of ceramic works from around the globe,with the Chinese,Korean,and Japanese collections being particularly rich. And for the glaze enthusiast,an unexpected highlight may be the fascinating and extensive minerals collection,where you’ll find many examples of our favorite ingredients in their raw form.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Harbourfront is an international center for contemporary arts,culture and ideas,operating a 10-acre campus on Toronto’s central waterfront. They provide year-round programming that supports a wide range of artists and communities,an important part of which is a long term residency for emerging craft artists. The craft studios are open to the public,and you're invited to watch and converse with the artists as they work. The studios include a fully equipped ceramic studio,as well as spaces for jewelry making and glasswork. Also on site is The Power Plant,one of Canada’s leading public galleries devoted exclusively to contemporary visual art,which regularly hosts exhibitions by the artists in residence as well as by the broader contemporary arts community. <p>Opening its doors in 2014,the Aga Khan Museum is a relatively new addition to the Toronto cultural scene,and one well worth the short drive to North York. With a stunning new building designed by award winning architect Fumihiko Maki,the museum’s aim is to highlight the artistic diversity of Islamic civilizations,from the Arab Near East,to North Africa,and to China. With a focus on islamic art,it should come as no surprise that this museum is a ceramic lover's dream,with a rich array of ceramics permeating virtually every one of the museum's many collections. While they do boast a ceramic-focused collection,the real pleasure is in tracing the evolving ceramic designs as you wander through the larger museum. The sculptures of this planned borough are true hidden gems,created by well known artists such as Raymond Granville Barger,Joseph Kiselewski,Carl Schmitz,and Theodore Barbarossa. With over 1000 sculptures in the complex,you’ll find a wide variety of forms and motifs,with artworks found above entrances and high up on building corners. A wander through Parkchester is a virtual terracotta treasure hunt,and you are sure to find many pieces to delight and inspire you!</p>

The collection originated with Henry Clay Frick,who donated his home,paintings,sculptures,and decorative arts to the public. The collection encompasses masterworks from the Renaissance through the nineteenth century,and includes a vast selection of ceramic works such as Qing Dynasty vases,Meissen sculptures,and Sèvres porcelain. While the collection’s permanent location is currently under restoration,it’s due to reopen later this year. Until then,you can explore these master works of ceramics at their temporary location on Madison Avenue.</p>

<p>Housed in the Rohan and Marsan wings of the Louvre,the Musée des Arts Décoratifs aims “to keep alive the culture of the arts in France which seek to make useful things beautiful.” With one of the world’s largest decorative arts collections (roughly 531,459 pieces) it certainly does just that! Of particular interest to the ceramic artist may be the Art Nouveau and Art Deco collections with their ornate use of ceramics,but you’ll find plenty of ceramics throughout the museum,as well as in its temporary exhibitions. If you are looking for a ceramics-rich museum experience,this is your first stop.</p>

<p>Located in the former Bastille viaduct,Viaduc des Arts has been in operation since 1990 and features 61 vaults that are home to over 40 artisans. The quality and diversity of the crafts represented is impressive,from feather workers,glass blowers,and shoemakers,to luthiers,cabinet makers,and – of course – ceramicists. Current ceramic residents include Wecandoo,which hosts a variety of pottery workshops,as well as Rairies Montrieux,which makes architectural bricks and terracotta tiles using artisanal processes. If you are a ceramics lover who also can’t get enough of other craft processes,the Viaduc is sure to satisfy!</p>

To get you started,consider visiting the Cafe Prunier,with its vibrant mosaic,or the Hotel Elysees Ceramic,which is particularly known for its clay features. Also noteworthy are the Restaurant Bon with its glazed bricks and plant mosaics,and The Lavirotte Building which features tiles by the famous ceramics manufacturer Alexandre Bigot.</p>

The museum prides itself on its collection of contemporary studio pottery from around the world,so you are sure to come across works by some of your pottery idols. <p>Combine a bit of ceramic history with a fun family day out at the Fulham Pottery Cafe! The historic Fulham bottle kiln is a Grade II listed building,founded in 1672 by John Dwight,a pioneer in English pottery known for his salt-glazed stoneware. While the kiln is no longer operational,you can spend a pleasant afternoon at the nearby Pottery Cafe,which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2023. The studio offers a wide variety of unglazed bisque items to choose from,with most of them handmade in Stoke-on-Trent,the UK’s capital of ceramics. With staff on hand to give advice,and a lovely coffee shop right on site,you’re sure to have a relaxing clay-filled afternoon out solo,or with the family!</p>

<p>Home of painter Frederic Leighton (1830–1896),this ornate home and studio is a Grade II listed building known for its elaborate Orientalist and aesthetic interiors. Rich with history and insights into the life of this famous painter,what makes this site a potter’s dream is the extensive use of tiles by renowned Arts &amp; Crafts artist William de Morgan,alongside 16th-century Turkish tiles,and works of Walter Crane,sculptor Edgar Boehm,and artist/illustrator Randolph Caldecott. Leighton House is a true feast for the eyes,offering a rich ornateness with a surprisingly tranquil atmosphere. With a regular calendar of exhibitions and a fantastic collection of de Morgan’s work,Leighton House is an often-overlooked ceramics destination that’s not to be missed!</p>

<p>The UK hosts a wealth of art and ceramic related events each year,and among the biggest are Collect and Ceramic Arts London. While not available year round,they are highlight events for the national ceramics community,and well worth taking in if you can time it right.</p>



<p>If you happen to be in London for early March,Collect is a must-see,featuring galleries and collectors who showcase the works of over 400 artists. Hosted by the Crafts Council,Collect is now in its 20th year,and features works of all craft media. Ceramics always have a strong presence at the event,but you’ll be equally delighted by superb glassworks,textiles,and multimedia pieces. This event tends to be well attended,so we recommend booking your tickets in advance,and being prepared for crowds.</p>



<p>Ceramic Arts London is returning this year after a brief hiatus last year,and is a high-caliber ceramics-specific event featuring artists from across the country. Hosted by the Craft Potters Association,this year’s event takes place in April,and is at a brand new venue. If you are looking for a clay filled day featuring superb ceramic talent,be sure to add this event to your calendar!</p>

<p>No trip to London is complete without a ride on the famous Tube,and this is particularly true for the ceramic enthusiast! As part of a project spanning over 15 years,Art on the Underground has been commissioning contemporary artworks that enrich the journeys of millions of Underground users every day. Many of the station’s installations feature beautiful tile and mosaic work,such as the William Morris inspired piece at Walthamstow Central,or the recent <em>Clay Station </em>installation by Assemble and Matthew Raw at the entrance to Seven Sisters Station. Also worth a view are the Finsbury Park mosaics designed by Annabel Grey in 1983 which contain 52 differently coloured tiles,and the Alfred Hitchcock inspired scenes at Leytonstone by artist Richard Jones. Whether you set aside an afternoon to explore this network of tunnels and tiles,or you’re simply commuting across the city,be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the delightful and diverse ceramic works that color the underground!</p>
