Running a ceramics business is no small feat,and as artists we often find ourselves wearing many hats; we’re product designers and makers,marketers and accountants,one-person shipping departments,and more. And while all of these things are necessary for success and managing them all can give us greater control over the direction of our business,if not balanced effectively they can lead to maker burnout.



In today’s article we’re going to discuss just what burnout is,and offer some handy tips to avoid it so you can continue to enjoy your practice!



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What exactly is burnout anyways?</h2>

It’s no surprise given the precarious economic climate and the neverending pressures (both socially and economically) to be productive. According to the American Psychological Association (APA)<a href="https://www.apa.org/monitor/2022/01/special-burnout-stress" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> burnout is at an all-time high </a>across numerous professions,spurred on by the COVID-19 pandemic and the potent mix of personal,professional,and health-related stress.



Most of us understand that burnout is a form of exhaustion,but in order to avoid this harmful condition,it’s important to recognize that it is not quite so simple. Burnout is actually a <a href="https://www.who.int/news/item/28-05-2019-burn-out-an-occupational-phenomenon-international-classification-of-diseases" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">syndrome recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an ‘occupational phenomenon’.</a> It results from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed,and it is characterized by three dimensions:



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion</li>



<li>Increased mental distance from one’s job,or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job</li>

While your work may suffer,burnout can extend into every part of your life and drastically <a href="https://www.healthline.com/health/mental-health/signs-burnout-and-how-to-stop-it#what-is-burnout" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">increase the likelihood of a variety of serious medical conditions.</a> These can include the development of anxiety,insomnia,or depression,as well as <a href="https://www.healthline.com/health/mental-health/signs-burnout-and-how-to-stop-it#what-is-burnout" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">increasing the risk for physical illnesses</a> such as high blood pressure,heart problems,high cholesterol,and diabetes.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Causes of Burnout</h2>



We mentioned that burnout is the result of prolonged workplace stress,but what are the specific causes of such stress? Often it’s caused by a combination of factors at work,including things such as challenging workplace relationships,financial stress,long hours,lack of workplace support systems,hazardous working conditions,and more. This state of stress can be compounded by stresses outside of work,such as caregiving responsibilities,poor health,or relationship challenges.&nbsp;



As self-employed workers,ceramic artists face a number of known work-place stresses. These include a very high workload,isolation,financial instability,and a high level of responsibility across a range of roles. We also commonly face the social stigma that goes along with being artists,where it is expected that we will be poor,that our work isn’t ‘real’ work,and that our prices are not justified. These factors add the extra pressure of justifying what we do to our families,community,and broader society.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to Avoid Burnout as a Ceramic Artist</h2>



While it’s important to recognize the risks and symptoms of burnout,don’t let the fear of it add to your stress! Knowing what symptoms to watch for,along with implementing a few simple strategies,can help you avoid it. Life will always throw us some curveballs,so it’s impossible to avoid stress completely,but by following these tips you can reduce your risk of burnout and maintain your enthusiasm for your ceramics career.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">1. Delegate</h3>



As we mentioned at the top of this article,it’s very common for us to take on many roles to run our ceramics business. In addition to making and designing our work,we are grant writers,educators,accountants,advertisers,social media managers,and more! Few other businesses operate this way,but within the art world it has become common practice,often to the detriment of our health. We often use our lack of financial resources to talk ourselves out of paying for support,but this isn’t necessarily the best long-term strategy for our health,or even from a practical business standpoint. If you are feeling pulled in too many directions,have a look at the structure of your business to find tasks that you can pass on to others.&nbsp;



In her <a href="https://staging.ceramic.school/lessons/naomi-clement-30-days/">30 Days Workshop as part of the Ceramic School’s Business Conference</a>,Naomi Clement refers to her practice of identifying areas of genius,excellence,and incompetence as a means of deciding how to delegate. Your areas of excellence are the things you are uniquely talented at,and these are the places you should invest the most energy. Your areas of incompetence,on the other hand,are areas where you lack skill,training,or enjoyment. These latter areas are where you should begin to outsource your labor,as they will be particularly draining and stressful. As artists,it’s very difficult to turn away opportunities. It can be a challenging road to making a career in clay,and every chance to exhibit,teach,donate to fundraisers,do a custom order,or give an artist talk can feel like an important step forward in our career. And of course,these opportunities can be very fruitful and they’re worth engaging with. But it is important to recognize that we are creatures of limited energy,resources,and time,and we simply cannot say yes to every offer that comes along.&nbsp;



When you are faced with a new career-related request,take some time to consider it before giving that immediate ‘yes.’ Do you have the space in your calendar for it? How much time/energy will it take? Will it actually be of benefit long-term? Will you enjoy it? If a particular opportunity doesn’t excite you and has little benefit,don’t hesitate to say no. Other things will always come along,and it’s better to save space for the things that add real value to your practice and career. Plus,when you over commit yourself,you are more likely to under deliver,which is worse for everyone involved!



Saying ‘no’ can also be advantageous for your business. If you are so popular that you have to turn people down,it shows how in-demand you and your work are,which serves to increase desirability!

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3. Pay Yourself Properly</h3>



One of the main workplace stresses that contributes to burnout is over-work. As artists,this can happen because we love what we do so much that we neglect other things,but it can also happen because we are underpricing our work and are therefore having to produce much more of it to make ends meet. And while it can be great for the ego to have so many orders that you can’t rest,it’s definitely not sustainable.&nbsp;



To avoid overwork due to poor pricing,have a realistic look at the number of hours that you can healthily work in a week,and based on that,determine the hourly wage you need to maintain the lifestyle you want. Measure the average number of pieces you can make in a week working at a comfortable pace,remembering to add in your average monthly operating costs. Consider that it is often more worthwhile to have fewer clients with higher prices,than the other way around.



This will all help you make a more informed decision about your pricing and the number of orders you can realistically take on. Don’t forget to add room for sick days and holidays,as you are entitled to these just as other workers are,and they are also important for avoiding burnout!

This one can be a tricky one for us potters as once we’re in a good groove it can be hard to pull ourselves away! At other times,we may be in the middle of a complex construction process where it’s not practical to stop midway through. Despite these challenges,taking breaks is invaluable for managing stress,and it’s important to remember that even a short 5 minute break can make a big difference. In a regular workplace we’d have scheduled breaks at regular intervals,but due to the nature of the ceramics process,this is not always realistic. If that’s the case for you,make a conscious effort to take a break every time you are shifting tasks. Finished throwing and going to load a kiln? Take a break in between. Finished trimming and going to pull handles? Another break. Not only will this offer physical benefits,but it will give your mind space to reset and prepare for the next process.&nbsp;



If you are doing a session with a long,involved process,be sure to pay extra attention to your body for cues to take a break. In these situations we can often remain in the same position for too long,or be overly focused and neglect ourselves. If you can’t physically walk away without risking the piece,taking a moment to simply stretch and reposition can make a big difference.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">5. Seek Support and Community</h3>



As ceramic artists it's not uncommon for us to work alone,and while this can have many benefits (particularly for the introverts among us),it can also lead to feelings of isolation. These feelings can be exacerbated when we are facing challenges and are struggling to problem solve.&nbsp;



A great way to beat the isolation is to build your ceramic network. Having connections to other artists can give you support from people who have been through the same challenges,and can also give you a community to share your successes with,which is equally valuable. Consider connecting with a local shared studio,guild,or arts council,and participate in social arts events when you can. It's also important to not neglect your other social relationships. It’s easy to feel guilty for not showing up to the studio every day,but having a fun social outlet and close confidants to whom we can vent are important parts of maintaining the energy needed for effective and joyful work. Remember,your work will be better when you are feeling good inside AND outside of the studio.

As artists,we are always our own worst critics,and it can be easy to focus on where we want to go,rather than how far we’ve come. So whether you just completed your first solo show,or you finally managed to do those taxes that you were procrastinating on,give yourself a pat on the back,and share your achievement with those close to you!

If you’re looking to create handbuilt ceramics,selecting the right type of clay can make a significant difference in your project’s outcome. Earthenware and stoneware clays are two popular options for handbuilding,preferred due to their strength and plasticity. Picking the right brand name for your pottery business is something that requires serious thought.

It is the token that gets passed around when your potential customers are talking about you.
<h3>Logo Tag lines:</h3>
A tag line should sum up your business in less than 5 words.

Tag lines help you really hit the nail on the head as to what you create,and also allow you to add in your own personality to the imagination of the customer.

"Wendy's Pots,Home-made planters your garden will love."

"Wendy's Pots,Seaside sculptures for inside and out"

"Wendy's Pots,Tableware without a Care"

"Wendy's Pots,Voluptuous Vases for Vampires"

Wendy's Pots,the company name,or the brand name,doesn't really tell you much about the company as a whole.

But the the tag line really sets different expectations within the minds of the reader / potential customer.

Once you have a Brand name and a Tag line that you love,you can start to think about how to lay it out.

Generally,the brand name is on top,in a big bold font,and the tag line sits underneath in a finer font.
<h3>Choosing a Logo Style:</h3>
Youthful,Bold,Elegant,Energetic,Industrial,Modern,Natural,Homemade.

You logo can represent many different styles.

Think about your target audience when choosing a style.

You wouldn't expect a bright,bold,orange,and youthful logo for a minimalist sculpture company.

You wouldn't expect a boring grey logo for a person who creates bright pots for kids.

The style of your logo represents who you are,and what you are trying to create.

It can attract customers from across the room,so make sure it sends out the right message.

When designing a logo for your pottery business,you should think about it both in color and in black and white.

Colored logos are amazing to display on social media,your website,or printed out on business cards.

Black and white logos are great if you want to print it off on black and white printers.

But a more modern reason to think about B&amp;W is that you can then use it as a stamp to <a href="http://www.metalclays.com/custom-signature-stamps/?affiliate=theceramicschool" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">stamp your ceramics</a>.

If you want to use your logo as a stamp,you cannot have gradients,or grey-scale - it needs to be a crisp black and white logo,that can easily be transferred to a plastic,rubber or <a href="http://www.metalclays.com/custom-signature-stamps/?affiliate=theceramicschool" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">metal stamp</a>.

Please note,that when ordering a stamp; black is always impressed,and it will be the part that gets pushed into the clay. With that being said,you should think about how black is used in your logo. For example,if you have black circle with white writing inside,you will have to push your stamp into the clay to impress hard enough to also raise the white lettering. This can sometimes result in deformed work. Instead,you should outline the circle in black,and to also change the letters to black,so the circle and the text would be pressed into the clay.
<h3>Logo Shapes &amp; Icons:</h3>
There are lots of different shapes your logo can take.

But we recommend that you think about the following:

Does your logo look good in a circle? Used for your Instagram profile picture.

Does your logo look good in a square? Used for your Facebook profile picture.

Does your logo look good in a rectangle? Used for website logos,email headers and footers,and stationary / order forms.

Does your logo look good small? Below we have listed the different ways to create your own business logo.
<h3>Hand Drawn Logos (Free):</h3>
One of the simplest ways to get started is to simply draw out your logo on a piece of white paper using a pencil,then outline it with a black pen.

It will probably take several revisions until you are happy with what you have - when you are happy:

Scan it in,or take a photo with your phone (Use the PDF Scanner app to take a high res photo)

Next you'll want to color it in,tidy up the lines,make it transparent.

You can edit your logo by using software on your PC (Adobe Photoshop &amp; illustrator for example) or online on <a href="https://pixlr.com/editor/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">pixlr.com.</a>

Or you can use your drawing as a basis for the next step: Designing it on a computer.
<h3>Online Logo Makers (free &amp; paid $):</h3>
There are a ton of free logo design websites available,which are a great way to spend an afternoon just blocking out logo design ideas.

There are generally two types of online logo makers available,the first just shows you AI generated designs,and you keep clicking next until you find one you like.

These are a great way to find inspiration.

The second is an editor,where you have to start from a blank page and build up your logo.

You can choose the font styles and see what works best for you,the colors,and the shapes / icons.

It is the fastest way to rough out a logo,and you really can create a logo you are happy about within half an hour.

You get a free trial,and after that it's not much of an expense to have.

How to film videos that get shared on Instagram

<h2>Devils Advocate</h2>



When I was growing up in the North of England,I always *hated* when my friends or family played "Devils Advocate".



(I'm not sure if this is a worldwide thing,or just from Lancashire...)



Playing devils advocate is when you think you are being helpful in pointing out all the ways something could fail,and all the potential problems you could face down the road.

"I'm only playing devils advocate!"
</blockquote>



My family and friends did this all the time...



They thought they were providing valuable information... AKA "Food for Thought"



But in my opinion... they were just being lazy.



After all,it's very easy to point out a potential problem,and to then walk away.



It's takes much more effort to point out the potential problem,and then to really take a minute to think about the problem... and offer a potential solution to the problem.



When people do this,they provide so much more value...



The previous quote could easily become:

"Have you thought about what to do when PROBLEM happens?" followed by..



"In my experience,I would suggest the following..."
</blockquote>



This type of discussion can put you on the right track,or a completely different tangent and open up new ways for you to develop as an artist,and as a person.



This is one of the reasons I loved my high school art class so much,because I would try my best to create something,usually to convey an idea or a concept...



And then my teacher Sam Rogers would take a look at it.



After I explained what I was trying to achieve,he would ask me a couple of questions,and then point out a problem and hint at a possible solution that would help me reach my goal.



Basically,he would encourage me to follow my ideas and try new things.



But this doesn't really happen at the moment on Social Media...



<h2>The current system of "cheerleading"</h2>



Social Media today has fallen into the trap of just being about getting the most likes.



❤ Instagram is all about getting the most hearts on your photos.



???? Facebook is also about getting the most likes and shares on your posts.



Really...



How many ❤'s do you dish out as you're scrolling through your Instagram feed's?



Or how about ???? or ❤️ or ???? comments?



<h3>Why do you do it?</h3>



The way these platforms have been designed,is to give you a small buzz out of liking the post,and the person who posted it gets a small buzz out of receiving a like...



Then you carry on,and get another small buzz,and then again and again.



What happens is...



<h3>We become lazy.</h3>



We end up scrolling through our feeds and liking as many posts as we can...



Without truly engaging in the content,or putting our brains to work,and providing real value.



- Scroll, - Stop, - look for half a second, - Like the post, - and repeat.



If we were all together in the studio,we wouldn't just say "LIKE" over and over again,would we?



No... we would talk about the work,about the ideas,about the techniques...



We would try to understand where someone wants to go with their work...



... and we would try to help them get there...



By providing fresh ideas,new perspectives,and sharing our experiences.



<h3>Don't get me wrong,"cheerleading" is still needed...&nbsp;</h3>



We have "cheers" on here instead of likes or hearts,and that's because people still need to be Cheered on.



I know a lot of us work alone in the studio,and it can be hard to stay motivated...



We need to still celebrate your wins,and give you a moral boost when you need it.



<h3>But,it just shouldn't be the only thing we do.</h3>



We need to make a community that strives to help everyone succeed in their own lives,more than just cheering them on.



1)&nbsp;We need to get out of the habit of posting images with no context just to get likes...



2)&nbsp;We need to get out of the habit of just cheering posts and commenting emojis.



Instead we need to learn how to ask for encouragement,and also how to dish it out.



This is how we can truly help each other to reach our full potential.



Anyway...



Why am I going on about this?



Well,I've just read a fantastic article about how to do "Constructive Encouragement".



<a href="https://medium.com/help-yourself/how-seth-godin-taught-me-the-importance-of-constructive-encouragement-7d7d2e034334" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Here is the article</a>&nbsp;I was reading. (It's more focused on online marketing and community building -&nbsp;I'll give an overview&nbsp;here as to how we can use these ideas to fuel our own growth.)



I have copied and shortened the following ideas directly from&nbsp;the linked article.



<h2>What is&nbsp;constructive&nbsp;encouragement?</h2>



<h3>Constructive Encouragement is specific.</h3>



<blockquote class="wp-block-quote">
“Great constructive encouragement is specific”
</blockquote>



Unhelpful feedback is general or shares the responder’s overall perception of the idea or project.



Constructive Encouragement doesn’t care whether something is “good,” “great,” “brilliant,” or “creative.” Instead,it hones in on a distinct element of the idea and offers particular praise.



It reinforces explicit choices that the person asking for feedback has made instead of giving simply applauding the work as a whole.



<h3>Constructive Encouragement is based on trust.</h3>

A high-five from a stranger is always welcome. But when you get a shout-out from a true friend or trusted colleague,you give it a lot more weight.
</blockquote>



“Trust” can seem a high barrier to the ability to offer Constructive Encouragement. But it doesn’t take much to gain trust and build a relationship: an active interest in someone’s success,a generous spirit backed by generous action,and a visible presence in the community or individual relationship is enough.



“From that space of relationship,it’s more effective to offer constructive support rather than just cheerleading. And,people who know the other group members are there to support them are more trusting and willing to ask the tough questions where constructive support would help,rather than superficial questions that just are seeking cheerleading.”



<h3>Constructive Encouragement is clued into your goals.</h3>

"Encouragement can’t be constructive if it’s not based on your personal goals. Interestingly,the burden for this one falls on the person asking for feedback more than the person giving it.
</blockquote>



This is what I meant with my high school art teacher...



If you want truly Constructive Encouragement on an idea or project,you need to explain&nbsp;why&nbsp;and&nbsp;to what end&nbsp;you’re pursuing it.



That gives the people you’re asking for feedback from context in which to give specific and relevant encouragement.



<h3>Constructive Encouragement is action-oriented.</h3>



Cheer-leading often helps us stay comfortable.



We receive praise and feel content that we’ve done enough.



Constructive Encouragement,on the other hand,should spur the receiver to action.

“A strong community can inspire you,motivate you,or instill the confidence needed to take action faster or sooner and execute more effectively.”
</blockquote>



Anytime you offer Constructive Encouragement,focus on what the receiver will be able to do with the information or perspective — not just how it will make them feel good.



<h3>Constructive Encouragement is beyond basic.</h3>



We all forget the basics from time to time but,generally,Constructive Encouragement should go beyond the well-worn mantras of ceramics or business development and elaborate on how those established truths apply in unique ways.

Valuable feedback comes from people fully utilizing their own experience as potters,ceramic artists,or even business owners. Instead of repeating the usual lines,use your practical knowledge to go deeper.

We should also value differing perspectives. One good piece of feedback can devolve into a chorus of agreement,instead of a real discussion of all the possible viewpoints.



Be willing to say something different.



<h3>Constructive Encouragement is invested.</h3>



You can hoot and holler about someone’s success or brilliant ideas without caring whether they continue to succeed or churn out genius.



Constructive Encouragement is rooted in your personal investment in someone else’s journey.

“I often find cheer-leading feels like a drive by — something high level,doesn’t take up much time,and is more generic. Constructive encouragement has the ability to cut through the crap and create openings for clarity and new perspectives to come through.”

You're in a community of like minded people here,all trying to further themselves and their careers.



Let's all work together to push each other towards success.



<h3>Constructive Encouragement is personal.</h3>

Constructive Encouragement looks a little bit different depending on the person or the project.
</blockquote>



Sometimes you do want a giant pat on the back.



Sometimes you’re looking for a critical discussion about your next steps.



Sometimes you’re open to an equal amount of criticism and sometimes you’re looking to just make the good stuff even better.



<h3>Things to think about when you post:</h3>



1)&nbsp;Yes,it's completely fine to just post a photo of something you are proud of - and just ask for cheers.



2)&nbsp;But,if you want "Constructive Encouragement" then you should also try to explain your thought process behind your work,explain what you are trying to achieve,what you have done to get you this far,and then ask specific questions.



<h2>Moving Forward...</h2>

There is a real and pressing need for specific,invested,contextual,and action-oriented feedback that can only come from a community of people who have been there,done that,and are still doing it everyday.

The Problem with Social Media... AKA: Guidelines for Constructive Encouragement

How much can you make selling your ceramics online? 



Well,in the real world...



If you have a stall at an art fair,and 1000 people walk past your work and see it,you can expect to sell around 3% of the people. So that means,you would make around 30 sales that day.



It doesn’t matter what you sell.



It doesn’t matter which price point you choose.



Generally 2% – 3% is a good number to target.



Well,the same is true for selling online as well. 



One of the great things about selling online,is that you can reach thousands of people at the same time,and send all of your followers to your online shop at the same time,and make your own art fair stall,without the hassle of transport,booth-fees,and all the rest of it.



Another great thing about selling online,is that you get to keep your shop stocked when you want... Either keep it stocked all the time,or just specific dates.



If you are selling Made-to-Order ware,then we recommend keeping your online shop stocked,ready to take orders. But,if you are selling unique pieces of ceramics,then we recommend running shop updates.



<h3>What is a Shop Update?</h3>



You keep your stock stored until you have enough to promote one batch going online into the shop at the same time.



So,for example,you would save up 20 mugs. Or 50 mugs. 



You would then say the items in your shop will be available to purchase over a set weekend. 



This means you can spend time promoting it,and making sure all your followers know about it.



The good thing about doing "Shop Updates" is that you send all of your followers to your shop at the same time. And this creates urgency with your followers,as you are most likely selling one of a kind items,that will sell out. 



If you have 100 people in your online shop at the same time,then there are people with the same item in their shopping carts,racing to be the first one to checkout!



There are loads of psychological reasons why these work so well... Scarcity,Urgency,Social Proof,to name a few... But trust us,they work.



So how much could you realistically make by basing your business model on running shop updates?



<h2>The Magic Formula.</h2>



Don't worry... We all hate math. 



This is a simple equation,and we will walk through it together.



Part one is: Follower Count x Conversion Rate = Potential Customers Part 2 is: Potential Customers x Average Order Value = Potential Revenue



Here's how it looks:



(FC x CR) x AOV = PR FC = Follower Count (Engaged Followers: How many people see your shop update?) CR = Conversion Rate (This is normally around 3%) AOV = Average Order Value (How much do you take on a typical sale?) PR = Potential Revenue. 



So let's do a quick example...



Let's say you have 1000 engaged followers who see your shop update. 



These could be people following your Instagram page,your Facebook page,or even your Email List,all combined.



And let's say your average order value is $50. 



(Sometimes you sell things for $20,sometimes you sell things for $80... on average though,it's $50)



And let's stick with the typical 3% conversion rate.



Well we would then put these numbers in the formula...



1000&nbsp;Followers x 3% = 30 potential customers.



30 potential customers x&nbsp;$50 AOV =&nbsp;$1500 potential revenue



Easy,right?



But as you can see...



There are several parts to this equation that we can change and improve. 1) FC = The number of engaged followers you have that see your promotion. 2) CR = The conversion rate of your online shop 3) AOV = Your Average Order Value



So if we increased our Follower Count,and had 2,000 people see our shop update... 



2000&nbsp;x 3% = 60 potential customers



60 potential customers x&nbsp;$50 AOV =&nbsp;$3000 



Then the potential revenue is then $3000 



So we've just doubled our potential takings by doubling our engaged followers.



The same is true if we upped our Average Order Value to $100



1000&nbsp;x 3% = 30 x&nbsp;$100 =&nbsp;$3000



Then we also get to $3000 



And if we also managed to increase the conversion rate of our online shop,we would also increase the potential revenue.



1000&nbsp;x 5% = 50 x&nbsp;$50 =&nbsp;$2500 



So with this one single shop update,you could potentially make $2500. 



And that's only based on having 1,000 engaged followers... What if you had 10,000 followers?



And depending on how desired your work is,you could run a shop update every 6 months,every 3 months,every month,or even every week. 



So is this a realistic formula?



Well,Yes! 



But there are some things to think about:



Firstly... This all depends on where your followers are,and how engaged they are... how many people actually see your promotional material leading up to your shop update.



We all hear about the way social media platforms change their algorithms,so not all of your followers will get a chance to see your promotional material. In fact,the bigger you grow,the less your followers will see your posts - but this works itself out because you then have more people to promote to.



Your engagement rate is going to be different across different mediums,for example,email lists have a high engagement rate (usually 30-50%),whereas Instagram has a lower engagement rate (usually 3-5%). 



This is why it's important to have several places to promote too,and why we always recommend setting up an email list,as they have the best engagement rates and conversion rates.



Secondly... You can only produce so much work at a time,right? So even if you had 100,000 followers on Social Media,you would still only be able to add so many items to your shop. You're not suddenly going to have 1000 mugs for sale each month. (But having a limited quantity for sale,and having a ton of followers that want your work,will make your work more desirable,and push your prices up)



There are lots of differences in engagement rates,and prices,and this is just a rough guide for you... But there are loads of potters and ceramic artists making a living online by doing shop updates. If you follow any successful potter online,on Instagram or Facebook,or if you're subscribed to their email list,you will undoubtedly seen them do a shop update. 



And if they can do it,so can you.



<h2>How can you start?</h2>



You only need a couple of things to start living off your ceramics.



<h3>You need an Offer.</h3>



To start selling your ceramics online,you need... well... ceramics to sell online!



You need stuff to sell. And you need it set at the right price to make it desirable to your target audience or potential customers.



There’s a whole range of people who will spend differently.



You’ve got people who will think $20 is too much for a handmade mug,people who will spend hundreds of dollars on a plate,and then people who will spend thousands on a vase.



The point is,you don’t want to cater for everyone.



If you price your work too low,you cater to the $20 bargain hunters but miss out on the higher spenders.



Price too high,you miss out on the low spenders.



You need to have work that is good enough to sell,and different enough to make you stand out.



<h3>You need an Online Shop.</h3>



A way to take payment in exchange for your work.



In real life,this is just you with a cash box sat behind a table at an art fair. Online,it's all automated... so you can take orders and get paid without having to sit in the cold.



There are many types of shops you can choose from,Shopify,<a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Weebly (opens in a new tab)" href="https://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=378877&amp;u=2009011&amp;m=37723&amp;urllink=&amp;afftrack=" target="_blank">Weebly</a>,Squarespace to name a few... you could even use a marketplace like Etsy (<a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="although we are against that (opens in a new tab)" href="https://staging.ceramic.school/should-i-sell-on-etsy/" target="_blank">although we are against that</a> because having your own branded online shop gives you more chance to improve upon your conversion rate)

This is usually the people walking down the high street and going into shops and galleries.



But guess what,people don’t just do that anymore.



They also meet online.



Instead of walking down the highstreet doing window shopping,and chatting to their friends,we're browsing Facebook,Instagram,Pinterest,YouTube,reading emails.



You need to build up a following of people who love your work,and you can do that easily by using social media.



And the good news is that it's relatively easy nowadays to build up a large following of thousands of fans,or even hundreds of thousands... especially on social media platforms like Instagram,or Pinterest.

So that's the formula you can use to work out how profitable you could be by selling your ceramics online. 



And those are the three things you need to be successful. 



I hope you can appreciate that you only need a couple of things to make it work.
