<p>Underglazing is a process used in pottery,in this method the decoration is applied to the surface of the pot,and later on it is glazed. The glaze covered the decoration painted below,and acts as a seal. Furthermore,it allows a uniformed surface. Underglaze ceramics use oxide derived pigments,these oxides fuse with the glaze mixture when you fire them using a klin.</p>



<p>On the other hand,as the glost firing is done at a high temperature,compared to the temperature used in overglaze decorations,the range of colours is automatically limited. Cobalt blue,mostly seen in the Ming dynasty is one of the colours that does not lose its colour during the glost firing process.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Process of Underglazing</h2>



<p>The process of underglazing has changed with the passage of time,and has caused a lot of confusion as well. The original underglazing process was similar to coloured slips,that are made by adding stains to clay that has been watered down. The underglazing process is stained well to ensure a strong colour. They are preferred for painting,as they tend to stay where you place them. In simple words,if you use an underglazing technique your lines will stay in place,and not violate other areas; as seen in most glazes. Underglaze are applied on greenware and wet clay,as they hold best on them. In addition,the clay based colours shrink as they pot does.</p>



<p>Today,many glaze manufacturers have started producing glaze that can be applied to your bisque. This is a simple process,and is achieved by adding less clay and more frit. As frit comprises of silica,and silica is a major ingredient in glaze. Addition of silica allows the underglaze to melt,which allows it to be more like a regular glaze. This simple change allows you to apply a layer of underglaze to a bisque.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Clear Glaze Application</h2>



<p>When you wish to apply a clear glaze layer,on top of your underglaze,the timing depends on a few things. For instance,if you have underglaze greenware,the most commonly used method is to bisque the decorated greenware,apply the clean glaze,and fire it again. It offers you a chance to add more colour,if you feel there was an area that was not well covered. As at times the colour issue does not show up before firing. If you apply a clear glaze over your underglaze,you will not mess up your design in any way.
However,if you have applied your underglaze to a bisque,you can apply a layer of clear glaze on top without a firing session in between. As there is a risk here,and you might mess up your design when you apply the clear glaze. Which is why you should sponge the clear glaze,on top of your underglaze. The remained of your clear glaze can be painted on using a brush. It will be ideal to check before you go ahead will full speed. As there are some underglazes that dissolve when clear glaze is applied on them.<br>
Keep in mind that underglaze is not glaze,and you can easily mix the colours together to make new colours. In addition,the colour stays the same,even after the firing session,which is unlikely during a simple glazing technique. This is one of the main reasons why painters prefer underglazing over the simple glazing process. Another point to keep in mind,when firing underglazing it will be able to take a hot temperature,but there will be a point where your colour starts to burn. To avoid such situations,read the description written on the colour; and do a test run on colour you choose to work with.</p>
